New evidence and research suggests that, while rare, trained women gladiators did fight to the death in ancient arenas.
Despite previous beliefs that the statue was of a woman cleaning herself, scholars now believe that she is, instead, striking a victorious gladiator's pose while raising a weapon in victory to the crowd. It marks only the second known visual artwork depicting a female gladiator. Take a look.
