New research suggests that trash in the ocean does a peculiar thing when the wind picks up; it goes under water. The theory says that high winds drive pieces of plastic far below the surface, lower than the skimming instruments used to gather trash samples go, lessening the amount of trash they detect and making the estimates greatly inaccurate.
