Voting Rights Act Ruling: What You Need to Know.

So the Huffington Post homepage read "Back to 1964?" and the POTUS said he was "deeply disappointed" but what can we expect from the Supreme Court's ruling?

Heat. The What.

I know you all thought it was a celebration of Lebron James' second NBA Championship, but sorry, I haven't resorted to fan-art quite yet.

Heat. is a piece about heat...or about figurative heat. Pressure...stress...expectation...all are included. The piece shows two sides. The side where you "feel the heat" and the side that's a bit more seen by the people around you. The left side reflects the inner turmoil...the right the side that you show those around you....or maybe it's the other way around...

It's more about the two sides you create out of it than a specific instance, event or feeling...and it's the viewer that really informs the piece as to what exactly there are two sides to. If you're worried about your beach body, it's about being self-consious in an image-oriented society. If you're feeling pressure to get work done, it's about self-confidence or questioning your abilities. If you're feeling pressure to grow up and get a job, maybe it's about hesitation and fear of growing older...

it's about having two sides of emotion...and those two sides are defined by you.

Supreme Court Takes on Voting Rights Act

The Supreme Court struck down a provision in the Voting Rights Act requiring a number of Southern states to get permission from the federal government before making changes to voting laws. The act was signed in the 70's to ensure voting rights and stop legislation that might hurt minorities' ability to vote in the most discriminatory states, but today, the judges said the rule needs to be revised to account for advancements in race relations in those states and across the country to ensure an equal playing field between the states. Supporters of the act say that the move all but destroys the Voting Rights Act, one of the most important pieces of legislation from the Civil Rights Movement, and that racism still threatens minorities ability to vote in many of the questioned states. Director of Perm Contemporary Art Museum Fired, Investigated.

As posted last week, the governing body of Russia has started to shut down and censor artists and shows that criticize the Sochi Olympics (Russian Censors Target Olympic Aimed Art), already facing widespread charges of corruption, but now they've gone a step further, investigating the ex-director of Perm's Contemporary Art museum for showing artists with signs of extremism. Is this the beginning of the end for contemporary art in Russia?

Supreme Court Raises Scrutiny for Affirmative Action.

Civil Rights activists breathed a sigh of relief today when the Supreme Court made a ruling raising scrutiny for the use of Affirmative Action, but not eliminating the law outright. Opponents worry the law has run its course, taking seats from more deserving applicants in favor of minorities to simply meet diversity requirements and supporters say its still needed to ensure diversity and combat racism in higher education settings... Sold! Seven Serpents.

The first ever studio visit in the brand new studio ends with a fantastic sale, as Seven Serpents finds a great home!

The piece has never been shown before and got lost in the fray a bit, with this being done just before the creation of "The Sacred Wilderness" show and series, but I think the piece was pretty influential for how little "praise" and attention it initially got. It was the first piece I remember using this green in a major way, and, I think, going back over the last year, you'll find that green has spread to a large number of works. This was also the first, though very abstract, piece that dealt with animals. Though it didn't pick up for another few months, the animal theme has been a major inspiration and subject for me recently...

It's a great display of pastel...a great bold color...a good mix of abstract and representational...and, ultimately, an important stepping stone in my last year's worth of development. Congrats to the buyers on a great purchase!
