Despite one of the craziest gallery night parties I have ever been a part of (congrats to everyone at Splash Studio for a great night) I managed to get a rather large, and a current favorite, piece done. Inspired by the video "The Secret Life of Plankton," posted last week, the painting is about diversity and detail, also commenting on what we are set to lose giving our current direction in planet warming. The piece is directly based on an illuminated image of plankton against the dark sea and while it is playful and childlike, it also depicts the diversity of life we often fail to realize is around us and is threatened by the changes of the Earth. What We Plan To Lose or A Countless Number in a Teaspoon Of Ocean is a showcase of diversity, an open drawer in a museum of minuscule beings ready for examination, dancing across the surface, and like the exhibits in a museum, a reminder of what is around us, what we may lose, and what we need to strive to save.
