Life in Chernobyl Reactor?

This seems like a pretty big deal (and I'm not sure I will totally believe it till I see more stories about it) but if it's true it seems like quite the find!

Art, the Holidays and Daniel Fleming.

The holidays are full of sales, stress and, hopefully, some fun...but the one thing most everyone has in common is that you've got a big list of people to buy presents for.

Now, you can choose to wait outside in the cold for hours to get that one half-priced TV...you can scour the internet for one of the 3 million "Perfect Gifts You've Never Thought Of" lists...or you can REALLY stand out with a one-of-a-kind gift from a local artist...and not to toot my own horn, but I think I've got a few good options.

Check out the list below for places to find me in the next few weeks and get your hands on some quality, one-of-a-kind, hand-made, local artwork from me and a number of other local artists...

The MIAD Alumni Sale - with over 100 artists and designers, check out one of the largest art offerings you'll find anywhere in the city. Stop by Thursday or Saturday to see yours truly painting live!

The Unicorn's Aprenti - Fresh off his recent stint on Project Runway, see Timothy Westbrook take on VIA Downer along with a variety of artists, including some live work from Daniel Fleming throughout the day on Dec. 11th.

Monolith.

Also received this guy...I've been interesting in doing more work like this...possibly even a whole show of this type...but it never came to be. Maybe it's time to bring it back...

The Golden Age Returns...

Just got this guy back from a gallery. Sad to see it didn't sell but happy to be re-introduced after over a year!

Spike Lee (or Affiliates) Hire Unpaid Designers, Steal Designs.

Well...nothing like not paying someone for their work and then stealing it...
http://hyperallergic.com/95917/spike-lee-doesnt-do-the-right-thing/

Now...the position wasn't paid and he never had a contract, so there's a few things the designer could have done to help himself...but still, it's a bad situation that shouldn't have gotten to this point.

and an update with this wonderfully good-hearted tweet...
Apparently Lee missed the part of the story where he owns the company that hired Juan Luis Garcia and stole the work...not to mention the fact that the original poster had been shown all over the net.

According to Spike Lee, If you didn't hire someone and don't know him your company is free to steal his work.

Top View. Another Addition to the New Project.

a 40" addition to the new multi-paneled series...really starting to become interesting.

Trying Out A Higher Minimum Wage.

Workers across the country from Wal-Mart to McDonald's have protested throughout the last few years over low wages and a stagnant minimum wage, but business owners say a change would mean higher business costs, decreased hiring and, possibly, loss of jobs.

Now we'll see who's right. SeaTac, a suburb of Seattle, has voted to almost double the minimum wage to $15 per hour...take a look.

Anti-Gay Receipt a Hoax?

News outlets jumped on the story of an anti-gay message scrawled  on a restaurant receipt in place of a tip (and donations poured in for the waitress), but new reports are coming out, with photo evidence, that it never actually happened...unless the waitress wrote the note herself.  Take a look...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/26/family-anti-gay-receipt-hoax_n_4343563.html

Hard to say, exactly, which story is true or why this was done, if it is a hoax...but let's just say this is another lesson in "not everything on the internet is true, even if it pulls on your heartstrings."

And now reports are coming out that the waitress in question has a history of lying...

The (Fine) Art of David Lynch.

If you had to pick a director who's films border on "fine art", David Lynch would probably be very much in the conversation....but how would it look if the famed film-maker actually took to a more traditional fine-art medium?

Wonder no more...

Parts of the Hole. A New Series In-Progress.

Parts of the Hole is a new series of large scale work that's a bit different from anything I've ever done...Yes I've done quite a few large scale pieces...but never quite like this.

This piece consists of up to 10 canvases measuring 60" tall by various widths from 16-40"...the pieces are all self-contained though intended to be shown together. Like other multi-paneled works, the pieces act together as one...but unlike other multi-paneled works, the individual pieces are intended to have a variety of possible orders and the ability to stand on their own or with smaller groups, if the location, owner or artist find it necessary.

It's a dec-tych (polytych is apparently the word commonly used for multi-paneled pieces over 4)...but it's also a 9-piece, 8-piece, 2-piece...and everything in between. The first piece can go next to the last...they can run together...they can stand alone.

It's an experiment for the artist: Creating ten pieces that all influence each other, but not intentionally creating work that depicts a constant scene or subject...tackling the concept of a series and what the "final" piece really is....and addressing the idea of creating a series; is it a series simply because I say it is, because the work was made alongside one another, because I hung it together, because it looks the same, because the same artist made it all, or is it something deeper?

It's also an experiment for the artist as viewer: Judging the work as individual and the whole...finding the balance and seeing if there truly can be a balance between a group and individual success...and then seeing if there is one "correct" setup or if there really can be a variety of "successes" in the end.

And lastly, an experience for the viewer: Do you agree with the artist's decisions? Do you see the piece as one large piece or multiple individual pieces? Does it matter? Does hanging work in this fashion change the way to take in the work?

Keep checking in as the series moves forward...I'm just three-parts in and it's already creating some very interesting and engaging relationships...and I can't wait to get 2-3 times the amount of action all working together...might get some heads to explode though...

Can You Keep Your Doctor?

We've already found out that you probably can't keep the insurance you like (whether or not it's better or worse than what you'll be getting instead), and the next question is "can you keep your doctor?"
