Nature+Art.

As an artist and a nature lover I have always been interested in integrating the two, although in a way that wouldn't leave any destruction in my wake, and have been inspired by the recent national park vandalism story to pick this idea back up in hopes of creating a more positive end to the narrative. I'm hoping, in the coming months, to create a series of paintings out among nature accompanied by photo journals of the experience...the art would, of course, be removed from the areas and no garbage or supplies would be left behind, using only the photos and the remaining artwork to convey the experience

As this project comes together and I look for funding/support/locations, I began this smaller version of the project to keep the idea alive and interest building.

Photos were found on google images or from stock photography. Used as inspiration for future project. Not owned by Daniel Fleming or for sale as seen here. Contact for information.

Negative Review Brings Accusations of Sexism.

Michelle Grabner is a bit of an art celebrity in Milwaukee (especially following her curation of the last Whitney Biennial) so it's no surprise to see the local scene playing defense to a negative critique....but a recent negative review, namely the use of the term "soccer mom", has a some calling the critic a mysognist and has many outraged over perceived sexism displayed openly in the New York Times.

The original review...

The local reaction...

Worthy of note is the fact that Ken Johnson, the critic in question, has been in a bit of hot water over sexist and racist accusations before...
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/29/ken-johnson-new-york-times-art-critic-racist-sexist_n_2213563.html

and lastly, another review of the show published before the review in question...
http://www.blouinartinfo.com/news/story/1056839/parts-and-labor-michelle-grabner-gets-to-work

Interesting to note both articles, the "sexist" article and the earlier from ArtInfo, seem to comment on the "domestic" aspects of the work, the fact that being midwestern is an important aspect of her career, that she's interested in boredom (bland is different but not that far a stretch), and even includes the following quote from Grabner herself...
“I was really drawn to patterns in my domestic middle-class lifestyle: The blankets that the kids were swaddled in,” she said. More recently, she “wanted to revisit that same kind of domestic patterning, but without the nostalgia.”
So, by the artists definition, her work is, to some extent, linked to her "domestic middle-class lifestyle"...Obviously, the tone of the articles is completely different from one another, but interesting to note the similarities as well...

What do you think?

and a follow-up from Mary  Louise Schumacher on why she thinks Grabner and her work deserve better...

Frank Gehry Gives Architecture the Finger.

A lot of Frank Gehry news lately with his new Louis Vuitton museum (I'll put some effort into finding some new architecture topics in the next week)...but see why he gave his critics, and architecture in general, the finger.

Why Is National Park Vandalism a Big Deal?

While many people in the general public seem to understand that vandalizing national parks is a bad thing, there are some that don't seem to understand the outrage over the recent graffiti vandalism being found on a certain instagram users page...

The general sentiment is "What's the big deal...we should be worrying about Ebola right?" Take a look as Modern Hiker delves into some reasoning that this is worth the attention...
http://www.modernhiker.com/2014/10/23/why-the-creepytings-national-parks-vandalism-is-a-big-deal/

Besides all those reasons...that argument is stupid. There is ALWAYS something "bigger" we could be worried about so if that's the only reason you don't care, you better never complain about anything...

What Can Modern Music Learn from Studio Constraints of Abbey Road?

With the millions of beats, sounds, effects and post-production tools, one might think that studios of old don't have much to offer today's modern music...but what can technical constraints teach us about the music we make?
