Double Vision : Chopping Onions

This is a piece i did last night and while it's by no means done, especially on the right side, I do really like where it's going. It's about six feet long so gauge the impact by that if you can...

I'm not quite sure what it means, but I wanted the piece to have two similar but contrasting images, a very bold level with smaller details coming out as you approach the piece. I'm thinking the right should be straight white and black, the reverse of the left, to make the comparison more direct...

I've been very interested in the idea of creating an "impression" of something. Where the imagery in the piece may not be literal but more a path to reach the underlying message. The work I've been doing in the last few days has taken on a bit more of a conceptual route, using title to connect to imagery to connect to ideas to connect to the meaning. It's a step by step narrative of the piece, deepening the overall work, but also leaving ledges or stopping points for the viewer to adjust their footholds. In other words, I am beginning to see my work as a process in itself. The viewer has to take a bit of a trip...they can understand the title, then the imagery, then the symbolism, then the concept...and each step along the way is meant to strengthen their understanding and also their comfort in reading the piece. They don't need to see it all at once...they can understand it in waves.

It's kind of like a book. You don't give someone a title, a page or a chapter and expect them to understand it, they have to add everything up as they work their way through. They can stop along the way, bookmark a page and think about what they've covered, or they can race through, eager to solve the problem...I'd like my paintings to be as open, understandable, and comfortable as reading a book.
