Basing Life Changing Decisions Upon The Durability of a Paperclip

Sounds ridiculous huh? Well I feel like people do it all the time. Not literally, at least for most cases...but so many decisions, morals, and personal opinion are based on fairly frivolous things for a very large amount of people. Grudges from the almost forgotten past, gut feelings, personal grievances with particular places or people...usually the decisions are small and rather insignificant, but when you add them all up, it's what makes you up as a person. Should you really base your life upon the frivolous and fleeting or should we really take serious that which may come to define us?

This piece is about that...the literal and figurative. It's kind of a "proof of concept"...the piece itself only exists the way it does because I had a paperclip and could break the seal of the dried red tube. Without the paperclip, the piece would not have happened...the canvas would probably have been divided into a number of smaller pieces...and I'd have something less meaningful or thought out to show you.

Did I know that at the time I used the paperclip? No...of course not. I just needed to get the damn tube open...but it served its purpose rather well. Would you risk your life on something so simple as I risked this canvas?

I suppose it's more of a cautionary tale than anything...this piece worked out and I really like it and maybe that's how it'll go...but it's a razor edge...it can go either way...And I guess...you just need to pay attention.

Get your head up, eyes out of your phone and look around...you may thank yourself someday.
