Ai WeiWei Runner-Up in Time's Person of the Year.
While "The Protestor" took the crown, artist Ai WeiWei, who was detained by the Chinese government for 81 days last year, was a runner up in the annual contest. The artist gained national attention when he was detained by the government during a big crackdown on activists, interogated about fifty times, kept incommunicable, and slapped with tax evasion, in a move the artist called "politically motivated." Outcry and support for the artist came from all over the world leading to many demonstrations and millions in collected donations...WeiWei was freed and is, once again, producing work in China.
