The Series

It's a little daunting having five big sheets of blank paper, all with a set direction, all with a deadline, all set to go up on a wall with a little less than a week to spare. Not that I haven't done work quickly or anything, but more the fact that these five pieces not only had to go together, but had to be good, had to be appealing to more than just me, and had to have enough legs to stand on their own, as well as a group. And while it may look like an abstract swoop is easy, it can actually go very wrong, very quickly. You can get too close to the edge, ruining the breathing room and negative space...the line can look unnatural, completely changing the mood....the ink can splatter too much, looking messy or unintentional....the color may not work...the abstract form might just end up being boring...while it's simply look like a couple expressive lines and marks, but there's a whole lot more that go into whether or not the thing is successful...even the color of the paper comes into play!

So anyways, getting started on this series hasn't been bad, but I have definitely noticed hesitation on my part to just get some marks down. I'm unsure of the second two as of right now, but have some ideas that may bring them to the finish line. The big piece is working well and while I haven't quite decided the next step, I have a lot of room to work with, and a great start to jump from.

My plan from here is to do a ton of work tonight...gonna throw on some special feature "making of" Lord of the Rings that should last about 17 hours, and am going to get a bunch of paper and just get going. I plan on ending up with between 2 & 8 smaller pieces, four of which will make it up on the wall. I'll be taking pics throughout the process and also, of course, of the finished pieces as they come through...
I really like the flow and softness of the abocve piece. It seems very fluid, natural and balanced to me and this is definitely a good start. I would like to do a piece the same size that is MUCH more dominated by the place "object" to see what it looks like, but I don't know if it really fits the idea I had for the series...

I personally like the second two pieces...but for reasons I will discuss further in the next post, I'm just not sure if they will work 100% for the series...I love the aesthetic, but i think they clash a bit with the flowing curves of the first piece.
