This piece is called Naive Melody, after the Talking Heads song of the same name. It represents a march, starting in the upper left and swooping down and forward to the lower right. It's not quite done yet...but just another hour or two should do it.
To get the background, I used a lined-pattern bed sheet as a surface and painted with watered down black paint on the reverse side of the sheet. The watery paint bled through in some places, less in others, and was blocked in some places totally. It created an uneven and unplanned collection of marks, adding to the swagger and rhythm of the creatures and creating an unsure, or naive, base to start from.
