That Neon Sign.
This is a piece I did a few weekends ago, but never took a photo before it was put up at the Ryan Patrick Gallery. Though not the best, this photo gives you a pretty good idea of the piece...
It's a totally new tactic and I think the results are interesting. I picked up a plexi frame for a couple bucks, painted the backside with clumps and patches of bright paint. I laid down a layer of black on the front side of the plexi and allowed both sides to dry...then...with an unfolded paper-clip, i began to scratch and pull at the black layer, removing small areas, revealing a slightly distant layer of color underneath. The colors are not restricted to certain areas or shapes, moving freely throughout the scratches...
I've been very interested in the "indirect" methods recently. Either painting a few layers for later removal, scratching to reveal surfaces, or using hard-to-control tolls to get natural marks, the "discovery" in these pieces has become as important as my plan. So while it may result in some frustrating sessions of work that just doesn't come to fruition, I think this investigation into new techniques will, ultimately, help my work contain and embrace that naive quality that is so hard to obtain in a believable way.
