The Danger of Being "Art"
Recently, a funny story came up that a cleaning lady at a museum accidentally scrubbed away an intentional patina on the ground next to an installation that looked like a puddle stain. The cleaning lady washed it away, apparently thinking that it was an actual stain and not part of the sculpture.
I suppose that's one person who doesn't have a problem saying what she thinks the value of contemporary art is...Joking aside, it's too bad. The lady could very well be fired and a piece of art is damaged...though I'm not sure how permanently as the piece was an installation and was on lone, leading me to believe that the "puddle" is re-made each time the piece is moved.
If so, I really hope they don't fire the lady over this. I'm sure it was an honest mistake and if you repaint the thing every time it's moved, that part of the piece is more than replaceable. That said, if you do set up contemporary installations, you do risk people not realizing what is and isn't part of the art... It's just too bad it may cost someone their job.
