The last large-scale mural by Keith Haring is in a bit of a dilemma. The mural, never quite finished, sits in in a sad state, battered by the elements and lack of care, and a couple groups have different ideas on what to do next. The first big push to conserve the mural started in 2010, asking for slight touch-ups and conservation of the current state, but did not exclude the possibility of future over-painting. The Keith Haring Foundation, however, thinks the original view should be restored stating that it was the vision that was important, not the brushstroke.
They seek to completely repaint Haring's mural, according to his written instructions, so that it displays his original vision and the piece's intended power, vibrance and meaning.
An interesting quote supporting the repainting...
In a radio interview for 774 ABC Melbourne, Engberg said that Haring left clear instructions that his works should be repainted when possible. “We are not talking about a masterhand work—it’s not chiaroscuro—it’s very delineated and anyone with a capacity in line work could [repaint it] very competently,” she said, adding: “If we stabilise it now, it would just be a vapid, dilapidated [piece] instead of a lively work.”
What do you think?
