Google has had driver-less cars zooming over 200,000 miles of California roads over the last few months, none of which recorded a single crash while under computer control. But HUGE problems still remain, say experts.
The biggest problem, some say, isn't going to be coming up with the technology, but more integrating the technology into an unpredictable, very human world. For instance, if a computer driven car is supposed to stop at a four-way intersection, wait till other cars stop or none are there, and then go...what happens when a 20 car line of human driven cars roll through the stop-sign, as many drivers do now. Would the computer say "to hell with it" and go, or would it patiently wait as each of those drivers trigger it's sensors, causing it to stop until no more cars are moving? Or, Could a cop pull over a computer driven vehicle? Or, Who is liable if a crash occurs?
