Without Bias, 25 years later.
Well this day is starting out with depressing posts, but this one is 25 years in the making...
25 years ago there were two stars that were going to change the NBA. One, the greatest to ever play, was Micheal Jordan to attained all the glory and realized the potential everyone thought he had. The other was Len Bias, one of the greatest prospects to ever get drafted. He, however, became the most famous "what could have been" in the sport and even now people wonder what he could have accomplished. Bias was the #2 overall pick by the Celtics in 1986, set to become their next great star and continue the Boston dominance of the 80's. Bird and the Celtics were aging, but Bias would continue their legacy into the 90's...until June 19th. Bias was declared dead after an accidental overdose on cocaine without ever stepping foot on the court for an NBA game.
The aftermath was a sad manipulation of the truth, portraying Bias as a lifelong abuser and his friends as the culprits who got him there. History has largely left Bias out of the mix and many of today's young fans know nothing of the once expected future Hall of Famer. Luckily, to some extant, his friends have been freed of most of the blame and it is known that Bias had only tried the drug a few times, however the controversy surrounding his untimely death still has tarnished his memory.
So today we remember another tragic episode in the history of sports. The death of someone who, by all accounts of those around him, was a great person, and by the view of the media was to be the next great star. RIP Len Bias.
If you are interested in learning about the whole story, I'd suggest watching ESPN's 30 for 30 episode "Without Bias." and read the following article.
