I've talked before aobut how I feel about graffiti and street art and all that...but here is a side I guess I never thought of. an LA street art show has seen vandalism rates rise as the show has gone on. Is this simply because the show brings people interested in graffiti into a smaller area, ripening the odds that one will leave a tag, is it coincidence? No one is quite sure if it will continue to other cities, but its definitely a worry to future shows. If rates go up for similar shows to be held, will galleries take the chance that they could be blamed for the destruction of private property?
Apparently it's not just the small time visitors either. Big names included in the show have been arrested one after the other throughout the city and slapped with fines. It begs the question...will street art help or hurt the movement? Will young people see the show and go that route for possible fame, bringing to life a new generation of street artists? Will vandalism rise as similar art becomes more and more collectible? Will it kill the actual implementation of street art publicly as people try to remove it from the negative connotations to which it is currently related?
I'm not sure anyone can answer, but as "Exit Through the Gift Shop" and new shows continue to gain mainstream popularity, you can bet the battle will continue...read the full article below.
