In a twist of art, Artist Richard Bell made a rather derogatory statement about the state of the art world and it's awards...while judging for one of those awards.
He says "Most artists know what these prizes are about...They’ve got very little to do with art and much more to do with the institution" That translates roughly to, they don't pick winners based on merit, but based on what's in the best interest of the institution or judge. And then he went on to prove it. He put 8 pieces of paper on the floor. Four had the names of artists he was friends with, two for pieces he liked, two for pieces he didn't and then he flipped a coin. The winner was the piece of paper the coin landed on.
Many people would immediately be up in arms. How DARE he put a prestigious award to chance! But in reality, thats what every award is. Every judge will look out for those people he knows, every institution will try to find a winner that will depict them in a certain way. The award, while helpful for the artist, is an advertisement for the institution.
...Sad but true...let's change that
