This is probably my favorite piece from last night, and it actually ended up this way because I totally overworked what was previously on the canvas.
I did an experiment with a very smoky incense and got an REALLY interesting, subtle, and detailed effect of the smoke and ash leaving residue behind (it's barely still visible around the edges of the canvas; That wispy grey...) but I, for some stupid reason, decided to continue making marks over it till I realized I was covering up the main focus of the entire piece!
It was annoying! I just burned through five sticks of incense, got a great and unexpected effect, only to slap down some stupid shape with pastel and ruin the whole thing!
I guess that's what's good about art though...the second I realized what i had done, I sprayed some ink on the piece and hastily covered up my horrible little screwup to find an equally interesting and engaging black shape. Then, from a whole that already had formed from getting a little to close to the burning incense, I cut a small triangle and backed it with a vibrant yellow square of fabric...
The large black shape really compacts and saturates the yellow triangle, almost glowing in it's isolation, hence the title and the feeling of the piece...it's like it's the last light before total darkness...
