This is a strange story. Up to 51 animals including Tigers, Lions, Bears, Wolves and Monkeys escaped an "animal farm" in Ohio, resulting in a large-scale hunt to keep the people of the area safe. The Police said they were not originally armed with tranquilizers and even after using one, were forced to order a "shoot to kill" for there own, and other people's, safety.
While it's definitely sad to see the animals killed I understand the order. It's a populated area and Tigers, Lions and the such are nothing to goof around with. Had it been one or two animals I would condemn the decision but with so many animals unaccounted for when the incident began, I understand that protecting the community was of the first and foremost concern.
That said, screw this guy and the rules which allow people like him to house these types of animals, whether or not the conditions were appropriate. Neighbors say the man was in trouble with the law and had been warned about escaped animals before, yet he was still allowed to harbor as many as 51 animals. Authoirites say he opened the cages and the fence to the compound and then inflicted a fatal wound to himself, dying near the entrance to the park. The real tragedy here is that all of the animals that died, did so because one man failed to care for them correctly or at least failed to recognize the consequences of what he was doing. Not only should regular citizens not be able to house these types of animals for the safety concerns of others, but animals should not have to answer for the shortcomings of an obviously un-fit caretaker...sad news, but hopefully this will spur more regulation in the county and future events, such as this, can be avoided.
