First note of business, this piece is not quite done and has a time-lapse video in the making. Unfortunately I painted the piece at night and the lighting is bad and need some extra time to get all the slides somewhat accurate and relatively close to each other before I release the video, but either way I'm excited with the piece and the video.
The Crystal Ships takes its name from the Doors song of the same-ish title (The Crystal Ship) and stems from the idea of what a "crystal ship" might be. Fragmented, reflective, undefined...when looking at a crystal it is easy to see a much more magnificent, a much more "impactful" object. The shine and the reflection depict something stupendous that simply isn't quite there...The crystal ship, therefore, would refer to a "ship" which may not be exactly what it seems.
A ship can mean the actual object, the actual vessel...or it could also refer to the act of moving, new surroundings, the act of change. The question of what is real and what has that "new-feel" glow to it, that crystal sheen that masks the actual object. It's the symbol of change, the path to get there, and the idea that it isn't set in stone...the idea of uncertainty...
All at once...it's a very confident and powerful piece, urging you to take the step toward something different, but also showing that what looks good may also be cloaked. A warning not to spend too long focused on the "sheen."
The Crystal Ships is about opportunity, trust, confidence and possibly, deception. The opportunity to make a change, the trust that that change is right, the confidence to take the first step, and the understanding that what you see may not be what lies before you.
not to mention it's a good excuse to listen to the Doors...
And check out my previous "God Is In The Radio" timelapse from a few months ago...new timelapse should be released soon so keep an eye out!
