A new theory says that instead of killing himself, Van Gogh was actually murdered and protected the assailants because he wanted to die anyways. Though the pair of investigators don't put forth much hard evidence, they do point out a number of oddities in the original story. First, police never recovered the gun used by the artist (or against the artist), they never recovered the easel or brushes from where Van Gogh had been said to have been painting, and that the only real evidence for suicide is that when asked if he meant to kill himself, Van Gogh said "Yes, I believe so." They also point out there was no suicide note, though not every suicide is accompanied by one, so that "evidence" doesn't hold much water...anyways, it's an interesting idea and especially so when you see the lack of evidence for the original theory, however there is just as much of a lack in the case of supporting the new theory. We probably will never know for sure, but I'd bet the original theory is right...
