Hangin Out With The Guys

Here's a new piece I started that just has the very first step done and taken care of.

And yes, it's a bunch of dates written on a piece of wood. They are the dates of death for my favorite artists and eventually, through the build up of layers and layers of writing, I hope to see this piece become a torrent of lines, swoops, energy and action.

The concept behind the piece (I know...crazy huh? when's the last time i had a concept before starting a piece) is to bring the artists to life. By symbolizing them in their death dates, and rewriting them time and time again, much like the Bart Simpson chalk-board punishment, I seek to create this energy, this life, this rebirth of these great minds.

Throughout the long history of man, repetition has been a constant form of bringing life and importance. Through ritual, prayer, & writing, all are repeated in the thought that this repetition brings these ideas to fruition. In the Bart Simpson chalk-board punishment, repetition is meant to make the idea stick in your mind...to become a constant in your life. In much the same way, I hope to create connection with these artists on a level above reading about them in a book...to really bring them to life within me, through my action.

Will it work? I don't know...at the worst I'll memorize some dates. At the best I'll become possessed by the greatest artists of all time...in the middle, I'll probably get some meditation done and create a good, meaningful piece...
