Antonio Banderas Takes on Picasso

In a new biopic, actor Antonio Banderas has signed on to portray who many consider as the greatest artist of all time, Pablo Picasso. The new movie is set to focus on his relationship with Dora Maar, one of many affairs throughout the artists life, and the process of creating one of his most famous and most political pieces, Guernica.

I've seen a lot of documentaries on Picasso, read some books and groveled at the base of some of his greatest work, but I'm interested in how this movie will end up. Picasso wasn't exactly a lovable guy, at least in terms of his attitude toward women and his own ego, and sometimes, knowing the guy behind the work doesn't always make you like the work more.

For instance, in an opposite way, knowing Andy Warhol really gives you a different perceptive on his work in a positive way (for me at least), with Damien Hirst, however, the more I seem to learn about him personally, the more I want to punch him square in the nose. Not that that's any reason to make or not make a movie, it's just an interesting aspect that can come from it. After reading a book about Kandisnky and how much hard-core theory and steadfast belief was behind his work, I had a bit of a "second-guess" moment as to whether I really still connected with it. I did still connect, I decided, but knowing the man behind the work definitely affected my perception and understanding...

Anyways a hollywood movie should never be the basis for what you think of an artist, but it does add some context, true or not, to the work we see in museums and galleries. I haven't seen a movie about Picasso so I'm interested in how he comes across...and I'm very interested to see how they treat the creation of one of the most recognizable pieces of art ever created...I love art movies, so hopefully, this will be a good, and accurate, picture of the man who completely changed art history.
