Killing Puppies In The Name of Art

An artist who's name was not released was recently barred from performing a piece titled Death of Metamorphosis due to the fact that it included strangling two puppies on stage...for real. The artist was trying to make a statement about how Alaskan sled dogs and Spanish hunting dogs are unfairly tortured, beaten, and killed, though I'm not sure how killing two dogs yourself makes the point that the aforementioned issues are wrong...

The artist was barred from the stage by a judge, even though the artist argued for freedom of artistic expression...a win for justice, humanitarianism, and art...

A real issue is revealed, though. With an ever-less-impressed world and an ever-growing stage, where do we draw the line for artists who are trying to grab as much attention as possible? I think this display is horrible and wrong, so I'm not arguing that we allow it, but where is the line drawn? Does the artist have to literally kill something for people to realize that his point is not worth the attention or performance or is there another way we can judge how far artistic expression can take you before you cross a line?
