A group called Take The Flour Back has vowed to "decontaminate" a research site of their genetically modified wheat, meant to repel aphids and possibly reduce pesticide use, but the scientists ask to leave the wheat alone and welcome the group in for a discussion instead.
The group argues that GM crops are dangerous and have wide-ranging possibilities that could harm the environment and consumers, while this batch of GM producers hopes that the crop will actually reduce pesticide use and help British farmers produce more wheat. They also say that the new crop will not be patented or owned by any private company (such as Monsanto), leaving the crop available to all farmers "at a minimum cost". Take a look.

I don't think the "discussion" is anything more than vying for a positive public image, as no minds will be changed either way, but I also don't think destroying test crops is a valid way to prove a mindset. Discussion is definitely important, but if it's a last resort before a group destroys your test material, it's not a sincere "discussion" from the side of the scientists, and you've already basically signified your disinterest in any hope for a legitimate compromise, just by making the threat in the first place.
