There are a lot of issues facing the world today and many people fighting to get their voice on the issues heard. That's all well and good, except that some people are so determined to get others to agree with their determinations that they use scary, exaggerated claims to sway the public. While it usually results in an increase of interest and, sometimes, actual action, once the public finds out they've been misled, it makes that issue uninteresting and, worse, make any more news less reliable and ends up hurting any legitimate research done after (for or against the cause).
