After a lengthy legal battle over artist appropriation, Shepard Fairey was found guilty of destroying and altering documents in a civil lawsuit he brought against the associated press. His "HOPE" poster came under fire as Fairey did not give appropriate citation for the photograph and used the photograph as a basis for the poster without permission from the AP. He lost that battle and was ordered to pay 1.6 million as a result. Take a look..

Usually i'd defend an artist for the fact that he changed the image (even though permission NEEDS to be given in the first place) but Fairey himself, who created his fame through appropriation, has sued (or at least threatened) other artists for their permission-less appropriations of his own "OBEY" work...and that just rubs me the wrong way...I guess "you reap what you sow" applies here.
here's a link to that story...
