With the anniversary of 9/11 right around the corner, the memorial fountains will see a great boost of attendance for the many events planned in remembrance of the tragedy. One thing that probably won't get brought up, though, is the hefty price-tag of the thing. And no, I'm not talking about the emotional price-tag or the building costs (which are roughly $700 million), I'm talking about the maintenance fees, which some fear are unrealistic and unsustainable. Check it out.

It's an interesting problem. You need a memorial that honors those people that were lost, but the honor is lost if that memorial cannot be maintained, falls apart and eventually has to be taken down. There needs to be a medium ground between "exactly what we want" and "what we can actually afford" or the honor and the remembrance gives way to another tragedy, the loss of the memorial. Would you rather get the biggest idea and struggle to afford the upkeep over the years, or something more practical and lose a bit of the dazzle?
