But It's Part of The Culture

For those that don't know, The Saints of the NFL were recently found guilty of placing bounties on certain players over the last three years, with cash rewards coming if that player was knocked out of the game. And one of the main arguments from people who don't seem to care is that "Everyone does it, it's part of the culture of the game" and I just don't understand WHATSOEVER where people even begin to think that that is a legitimate reason for not caring.

"Everyone does it, it's part of the culture of the game"

Ya, so what? It's against the rules. The Saints got caught. Speeding and tax evasion happen all around the country, that doesn't mean you don't get in trouble when you're caught.

Just because something's prevalent or "part of the culture" doesn't mean it shouldn't be changed or dealt with. Part of the culture of LA is gang violence, so I suppose we shouldn't try to stop that from happening? The culture of Milwaukee includes high levels of segregation, but since it's been happening since the city was formed, we shouldn't try to fix it. Much of the culture of MLB included steroid use, and I spose we should have just given that a pass since so many people were doing it.

If you personally don't care, that's one thing...but the "it's part of the culture" argument is extremely shortsighted and discounts 10,000 years of documented adaptation and changing culture and practice. I guess next time a human rights question gets brought up we should all just roll our eyes and yell "No need to change...it's part of our culture."

And before someone thinks my point is to equate hard hits in football to equal rights...

It's not that hard hits equate to segregation, gang violence or human rights. That's ridiculous. You and I know that. The point is that the argument "Well that's just the culture of..." holds no ground in any sense of any culture that's ever existed. Cultures change, even within a year. To act like "because its the culture" is some kind of proof that it's OK just proves that you don't want to deal with the issue.

The point is that there's countless of examples of things being the "culture" yet those things are changed over time because it's in the best interests of everyone. This is one of those instances. It's nowhere near as big of a deal as any of the things I referred to...but the argument is exactly the same, and holds no validity in reality, only in your head where you just want the problem to disappear.
