To Indulge. The What.


Back in the day, the church used to offer Indulgences or "prayers" for money. They'd take a certain amount and promise a certain number of prayers for that person, their family, or whatever...and as you can imagine, they often didn't deliver not only the help promised, but they didn't even do the prayers asked for. It made the church really rich, but didn't do a thing for the needy who gave their hard-earned cash with the hope of salvation...

This piece "To Indulge." is inspired by this idea. The "holy" man with his large hat, sitting in a pile of prayer, money and hopes, keeping most at his level, only allowing a select few to emanate to the "heavens" above. He sits, facing his open bible, yet the pages don't turn and his eyes drift to the money and treasures below. His mouth opens as if to say a prayer, but hangs agape as his mind wanders to more earthly delights...
