The Louvre's newest venture has founded an extension of the famed museum in the financially downtrodden town of Lens, hopefully, as planners say, to help invigorate the economy, but locals don't seem so excited about the idea. "We need money and jobs" said one local, adding "who's da Vinci anyway"....take a look

I understand the concern. Plopping a museum in a town with no businesses isn't going to seem like a way to bolster the well-being of the residents...but I ask what they'd rather have instead. The one local said "We need money and jobs" but what does he propose they do instead? Are other businesses offering to come to town? Is there ample government funds to extend a stimulus? Are local or national business owners speaking with the town leaders?
I mean, I get that an art museum might not offer the immediate relief they are looking for, but neither will turning down every opportunity that isn't a factory with 3000 jobs. The museum won't solve the problem, but I definitely think it could get traffic moving through the town which, at the very least, will bring new people into the area for the day.
Furthermore, education of culture is vastly important (Do you really not know who da Vinci is or his importance?), even when people aren't having luck finding enough money for themselves. While I understand that they would rather a job got dropped into their laps, a strong cultural institution isn't exactly a poor second-choice.
