Hoyland (1934-2011

Another early abstract painter died recently. Known for his large abstract works and one artist claiming he could be the "next turner",  Hoyland used travel as inspiration and left behind some great abstract works. To me, his work looked a little less focused than some of my favs, utilizing techniques of Pollock, Rothko, and some aesthetics similar to Twombly and Deibenkorn, while never really breaking out into something that was completely new. For me, he lacks that distinctive look, stroke, technique or idea and while looking through his work, I think more about the people I see in them, than the artist who was creating them. They just seem a bit too out of sorts for me...

While he's not someone I'm directly influenced by or have known of specifically well, it's still definitely worth it to take a look at some of his stuff, learn about him, learn from him, and remember him. RIP John Hoyland.
