Blast from the Past

Not the Brendan Frasier movie (did anyone other than me see that one? it's not very good) but this guy!
The Wolf - a huge departure from the stylistic tendencies of the time for me
I think I did this piece a year before I left for college and it is surprisingly similar to some of my recent work. It really stands out among the pieces that comprise the rest of the that period of work, not because its better or anything (Im not sure it is any good really) but because of how much it breaks from the very "fauvist" style I had been using throughout that "oeuvre."
Reference piece for "The Wolf", interesting to see my timidity in going full in to the "expressionistic style."
I was imitating, borderline copying, Matisse's paper cut-out style. Large blocks of bright color butting up directly against each other. Large outlines seperating objects and an overall lack of real expressive strokes. The work is not realistic or controlled, but the brushwork is limited to the exact area that the subject covers in most cases, and the subject material was largely the human form, flowers, or still life.
"dreamt of flowers" - no longer existing (ca. 2004-05)
While I like looking back and seeing the way my work has evolved from the early years, even in the brief 9 years I've been seriously painting, it is also interesting to see pieces like "The Wolf" which stemmed from something I obviously hadn't entirely grasped or embraced yet.
