Here is the piece i made last night. It's acrylic, ink, pastel, and coffee stains on a bare canvas. At this point it's not totally done. I'd like to up the visual intensity and energy while still keeping the solemn tone that I feel from it at the moment.
The black form represents the catholic cross behind the subject, the outlined figure to the right. Like a henge looming over the figure, the cross represents faith (see below paragraph), the idea of faith and the weight that so many people bear because of it. It doesn't back the figure up or help him stand strong, instead it almost folds upon him.
It's not meant as a "fuck religion" piece whatsoever. It's meant to display the conflict between faith and belief...in anything . faith in religion, faith in people, faith in politics, faith in the world, faith in art. When you stop believing, faith(for me it is more referring to a faith in art) can become a burden and if you lose your belief, that faith becomes a crisis in your life. A turning point. Do you try to re-ignite the flame that once impassioned you, or do you let the flame die and hope for a new one to arise?
