To Linger...

I've been doing a few smaller pieces recently...and the starting point has been a minimal approach, something, if I had to put a name to, I'd call "lingering."

And i supposed the approach isn't that drastically different from my usual work, but with these I've really been focusing on reducing mindless marking...taking a few steps away from the work and allowing the marks I've made to really inform what's placed around them. Usually, I react quickly, placing mark after mark, creating a jumble of detail before stepping back to assess...here I make a few marks and then without even really looking at the piece, take a step back and remove myself from the room...

the marks stay...they grow...they inform the empty space...and then I return to see how they've done. I'm not sure exactly how the new approach changes the work, but it seems to be a bit more minimal...a bit more spacious...a bit more reserved, yet still powerful with a closer look. Each object gains a bit of individual importance while the piece as a whole relaxes and welcomes you into the more focused narrative...
