No that's not a typo...this piece called "Passing Down Tails" is about receiving something (inheritance, heritage, culture, information etc...) and our ability to completely change what it means to us.
The title comes from a thought on evolution...that we have had tails passed down to us and still have them, in a sense, but that we slowly changed what's been given to us over time to the point that you would never know they ever existed at any point on our family tree.
It's a play on words in relation to the culture of the spoken word and morality tales that have been passed down for thousands of years, always adapting to the needs of the new society...
and it can then be applied to your life directly through your own "inheritance" of sorts. In politics we constantly squabble over what the founding fathers intended...we fight with our family about changing views and developing beliefs...we argue with friends as we move through our lives and encounter new situations...
The idea behind the piece is to recognize your shared history...realize the similarities you have...and accept that differences are a necessary part of moving forward.
You should welcome the things you inherit... they are everywhere and there's nothing you can do about it... but that doesn't mean they can't change or that they need to. It's up to us to understand and move forward in a logical way instead of kicking as screaming every time something doesn't perfectly match up.
