I've always enjoyed working on found objects...the surface has a pre-determined personality...the fact that it is an object that, at one point, functioned apart from art feeds the narrative in a somewhat "collaborative" way with the marks and intention of the artist...and then that they take up a physical space instead just being reserved to the wall, creating objects of curiosity...objects of "importance"...relics of some kind.
It's a piece of art...but it had an alternate life as well...it's a fossil from a forgotten past, re-imagined in today's world.
The value of surface can never be overstated, so make sure you're not simply working on a surface because it's what you've always done...shake up your process.
Take a look at the start of a new series of found objects pieces, all on antique objects scavenged from around Milwaukee....
