Now...surprising? I wouldn't really say so. The Midwest always gets left behind when it comes to what's new, and Milwaukee still has a LOOOOOOOOONG way to go before the art world (or even chicago) will acknowledge us...but I suppose I see this more as an opportunity than a reason to gripe. Do we have good shows? ya...but do we have GREAT shows that deserve international attention? maybe...but it's not completely obvious, even to people within the city...
The art world may have a problem with acknowledging us simpletons in the midwest, but Milwaukee, at times, also has a problem with being serious unless we get criticized or left out of a list.
If you're involved in local arts through making it yourself, viewing, or writing:
encourage others to attend local shows
spread the news
write about good local shows
advertise good local shows
support local artists
promote local work or projects
talk about art
talk about local art
talk about local artists
spread your work
put in the effort to make your work or showings as good as humanly possible instead of just wall decoration for a drinking party on gallery night.
It starts here...then maybe the coasts will catch on.
