Express Creative
It may come as a surprise to some, but I actually have a full-time design and illustration job in addition to my art work and blogging. It makes for a severe lack of free-time, but a great variety of creative opportunity...take a look at one of my recent non-fine-art projects, a new website and branding for the Shepherd Express' design company, Express Creative, and if you are looking for good creative services at great prices, check out the "contact"page and give us a call!

I know a lot of artists that really seem to reserve their creative abilities. They aren't interested in, perhaps, more financially practical endeavors, and sometimes the opposition goes so far as to claim you're "selling out" if you do anything other than make fine art. I don't buy into that. While I do see a big difference between my design and artwork (and between design and art in general), I know that neither would be as developed without the other, in my work and in the world we see around us. They are different avenues of working out creative problems...and the more you do things like that, the more options you have readily rolling around your brain when you need them. I'm not going to say that designing a nice logo is as fulfilling to me as completing a great painting, but it keeps me critically thinking, creatively thinking, and forces me to look at creativity with a different mindset daily.
I'm not saying to drop your art and get a design job, but you shouldn't think of getting financial stability in a creative field as "selling out". It's just another way to support the thing you love while still accessing, informing, and advancing your creative mind...not to mention, being able to buy whatever supplies you need at whatever time takes a whole lot of worry out of the artistic process.
