The Indian Corn Galaxy
I couldn't decide if this should be microscopic or universal...indian corn or galaxy....and so it's both. The Indian Corn Galaxy is a symbol of the main idea that's been rolling around my head the last few weeks; everything's the same, even if it's different. At first that doesn't make sense at all...and it's not supposed to...it's meant to confuse...to get the initial shock of "what the..." out of the way.
And once you get over that, you can remove yourself a bit. The idea is not that I am the same as you is the same as a rock is the same as a car. That's not the point. The idea is that, in the grand scheme of things, we are all equals. While compared to an atom, we are huge, compared to a tree, we are small. When compared to dirt, you are powerful, compared to the sun, your strength is minuscule. If you compare humanity to ants, you say we are more advanced or more civilized...you could also say we are more vengeful, fickle, and illogical. You can say that we rule the world...or you can say that we are destined to go down with it....the idea isn't to literally compare things and call them the same title, the idea is to realize our ultimate insignificance, and to free you because of that. You can look at insignificance and wonder what the point is...wonder why you'd waste your time...or you can look at it and say "if there's nothing to lose...why not."
So I guess it's not "everything's the same", it's "nothing matters more than anything else" and while that may be a little depressing to know that you are as important to the universe as a dish of mold, it's also liberating...I mean, how many bad days does a dish of mold have?
