Usually on our graduation night we are hugged, kissed, congratulated, given gifts, words of praise, words of encouragement, words of accomplishment,awards...you're usually the center of attention and everyone should be pretty impressed right? Wrong.
It's an important moment, sure, but graduating in and of itself is nothing extraordinary. Billions have done it. Hundreds of millions do it every year and plenty of people graduate only to become total failures, horrible people or worse later in life.
A recent commencement speech at a Boston area high school has people thinking the same thing. In it, the speaker stepped away from the usual congratulations, deciding instead to challenge the new graduates to accomplish something actually extraordinary with their lives and warned about the meniality of a life based simply on accolades rather than the value of your achievements. Take a look.
