Cyclist Pleads Not Guilty in Pedestrian Death

A San Francisco cyclist pleaded not guilty to a vehicular manslaughter charge after he struck an elderly man after blowing through a red light. Police and witnesses say the man was traveling at high speed downhill, had skipped multiple stop signs and blew through through a crowded intersection on a red light. It has also been claimed that the man was trying to break a speed record for a popular bike route, and an electronic monitor has provided police further evidence.

This is what gets me...almost everyone that rides a bike regularly that I know complains about how cars disregard bikers on the road and that bikers deserve the same rights as cars. That's all well and good...I agree. But if you are going to demand equal respect as cars, then you also need to accept equal responsibility and obeying traffic laws is the first major hurdle. I'll be the first to admit that I don't stop at stop signs and red lights, but I do slow down and look...and there's really no excuse for something like this to ever happen no matter the circumstances...
