The Supreme Court struck down a provision in the Voting Rights Act requiring a number of Southern states to get permission from the federal government before making changes to voting laws. The act was signed in the 70's to ensure voting rights and stop legislation that might hurt minorities' ability to vote in the most discriminatory states, but today, the judges said the rule needs to be revised to account for advancements in race relations in those states and across the country to ensure an equal playing field between the states. Supporters of the act say that the move all but destroys the Voting Rights Act, one of the most important pieces of legislation from the Civil Rights Movement, and that racism still threatens minorities ability to vote in many of the questioned states. Take a look.
