This piece hails from my time at MIAD during my first and (sadly) only printmaking class, teaching a form called Collography. I loved it. It felt more experimental than direct drawing on a surface and the application of color was always an adventure. Where, with painting and drawing, I can make a mark and, usually, get what I intend, the process of collography really brought a great deal of chance to the final product. This freed me a bit...as I simply had to accept that I wasn't in total control and, unless I really really really pushed for it, I had to accept something that wasn't exactly perfect.
While striving for perfection is admirable, I have always enjoyed the personality that can come from chance marks, colors, and effects.
As previously stated, it's unfortunate I only managed the one printmaking class...but I still believe it's been a big influence on the development of my work. I welcome the meandering...and strive for a natural finish...I want the work to appear spontaneous...
Take a look at one of the first "successes" of the class...
And then take a look at a few more pieces from the same plate...
