I'm five pieces into my new collection of abstract work and, so far, I've been pleased with the results. I have to admit that starting an abstract piece has come a little bit harder than I originally imagined, but I suppose it makes sense. Instead of an actual image that I am trying to move from brain to canvas, I'm trying to translate...a concept...an inspiration...into a image that not only conveys that idea, but connects cohesively to the work already produced. It's like starting a race with no clear path laid out...but a knowledge of the destination you seek to reach.
Moving West is, so far, the inspiration and the concept behind the collection...and there's a number of ways to approach that...
a literal act of moving to the west
the geographic west
the cultural west (western vs. eastern culture)
the directional west (relationship to sun set/rise)
the american "western frontier"
the idea of "moving west" as a fresh start (again in reference to history)
heading into the unknown
heading to lawlessness (the wild west)
spreading/destruction of culture (native v. immigrant)
advancement/plague (depending on your viewpoint)
and many many more...
As the concept and ideas get further fleshed out, take a look at the work so far...
