Parts of the Hole. A New Series In-Progress.

Parts of the Hole is a new series of large scale work that's a bit different from anything I've ever done...Yes I've done quite a few large scale pieces...but never quite like this.

This piece consists of up to 10 canvases measuring 60" tall by various widths from 16-40"...the pieces are all self-contained though intended to be shown together. Like other multi-paneled works, the pieces act together as one...but unlike other multi-paneled works, the individual pieces are intended to have a variety of possible orders and the ability to stand on their own or with smaller groups, if the location, owner or artist find it necessary.

It's a dec-tych (polytych is apparently the word commonly used for multi-paneled pieces over 4)...but it's also a 9-piece, 8-piece, 2-piece...and everything in between. The first piece can go next to the last...they can run together...they can stand alone.

It's an experiment for the artist: Creating ten pieces that all influence each other, but not intentionally creating work that depicts a constant scene or subject...tackling the concept of a series and what the "final" piece really is....and addressing the idea of creating a series; is it a series simply because I say it is, because the work was made alongside one another, because I hung it together, because it looks the same, because the same artist made it all, or is it something deeper?

It's also an experiment for the artist as viewer: Judging the work as individual and the whole...finding the balance and seeing if there truly can be a balance between a group and individual success...and then seeing if there is one "correct" setup or if there really can be a variety of "successes" in the end.

And lastly, an experience for the viewer: Do you agree with the artist's decisions? Do you see the piece as one large piece or multiple individual pieces? Does it matter? Does hanging work in this fashion change the way to take in the work?

Keep checking in as the series moves forward...I'm just three-parts in and it's already creating some very interesting and engaging relationships...and I can't wait to get 2-3 times the amount of action all working together...might get some heads to explode though...
