Understanding Pollock.

If you find yourself looking at modern art wondering "What the hell" don't worry, you're not alone. Despite over a century of "Modern Art" and a half-century since abstract-expressionism really took hold, many people find themselves perplexed, confused, even mad when they walk into a gallery nowadays and see something that just doesn't meet their definition of "art."

And while each person is welcome to their own opinion, I find many people simply don't understand, or have even realized there is, much of the idea behind making a picture that isn't realistic or representational...

Take a look at this documentary about Jackson Pollock, probably the most famous abstract expressionist, featuring a number of interviews and commentary from artists of the period, friends of Pollock, and Pollock himself all on abstract art, it's emergence and why it was necessary for the artists of that time.

You don't have to like modern art...you don't have to like Pollock...you don't have to like art at all, but I think it's important that you know a little about the art before you dismiss it on looks alone.
