I've never really liked boxing. I've never watched a match on my own...I've never ordered a "Pay-Per-View" of the upcoming fight...my only memory of boxing involves a very famous biting incident.
My grandpa was once a gold-glove winning amateur, but the reality of that accomplishment and connection to the sport has always escaped me..
But recently, something's changed...I still haven't watched a current fight and am not too interested in watching people punch beat the snot out of each other, but I've been watching hours of old footage from the early 1900s...watching documentaries on the greats of boxing history...and have really taken an interest in the social narrative which followed boxing in the early part of the 20th century.
Maybe it's my favorite artist's interest in the legends...(
http://www.wikipaintings.org/en/jean-michel-basquiat/boxer)...maybe it's my curiosity in all parts of history...maybe it's just something new, but no matter what, it's become a productive inspiration. Take a look at three pieces inspired by the legends of boxing...
