In a surprising move, anti-prostitution laws in Canada have been struck down by the supreme court. They say the decision was made because the laws submit women to more danger, since things being illegal doesn't actually stop people from taking part, it just means they have to do it illegally without any of the protections of "legitimate" businesses. Interesting concept...and I think it makes sense on some levels. Women trying to get out of prostitution, I imagine, would have a harder time getting another job if they had arrest records and such...but I could also see some people more interested in entering the business now that it's a "safer" choice with some legal and medical protection and regulation, which might not be the best step forward either...
